Biography
Lisa Streich, born in Norra Råda, Sweden in 1985, studied Composition and Organ in Berlin, Stockholm, Salzburg, Paris and Cologne with among others Johannes Schöllhorn, Adriana Hölszky, Mauro Lanza and Margareta Hürholz.
Master classes with a.o. Chaya Czernowin, Steven Takasugi, Beat Furrer and Daniel Roth complete her musical education.
Her works have been performed in among other countries in Sweden, Germany, Israel, France, Austria, Great Britain, Japan, Canada and the US. Her music has been played by among others Deutsche Symphonieorchester Berlin, Quatuor Diotima, Ensemble Recherche, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, OENM, Eric Ericson chamber choir and Sweden´s radio choir at among others MATA New York, Ultraschall Berlin, Tzlil Meudcan Tel Aviv, Ircam Paris, Wien Modern and Cologne Cathedral.
Prizes and scholarships include Cité des Arts Paris, orchestra prize by the Anne-Sophie Mutter Fund, Busoni Förderpreis of the Academy of Arts Berlin, Bernd Alois Zimmermann Prize, the Rome Prize Villa Massimo, Roche Young Commission by the Lucerne Festival and the Ernst von Siemens composers prize. She has a portrait CD at WERGO / Zeitgenössische Musik (2018) and KAIROS (2019).
She lives on Gotland, Sweden.

Lisa Streich est lauréate de prix et de bourses d’exceptions tels que la bourse de la Cité des Arts de Paris, le prix d’orchestre du fonds d’Anne-Sophie Mutter, le Busoni Förderpreis de l’Académie des arts de Berlin, le prix Bernd Alois Zimmermann, le prix de rome – Villa Massimo, la Roche Young Commission pour le Festival de Lucerne et le prix de composition de la fondation Ernst von Siemens.

“Nella lingua svedese la parola älv serba in sé una serie di significati che sono in grado di costruire una semantica perfettamente specchiata in una memoria operativa dell’immaginazione: con essa posso indicare ciò che è amabile, prezioso, tendenzialmente piccolo in senso figurativo, che rileva un sottosuolo o acqua che scorre al di sotto, può affiancarsi al suffisso di fiume, fino ad arrivare a tradurre ciò che normalmente inquadra il minuscolo dato da elfi o folletti. “The first sounds of Lisa Streich’s portrait disc in Wergo’s “edition zeitgenössische Musik” series are striking. In the opening pages of the orchestral work SEGEL, five percussionists arrayed in a wide semicircle around the stage take turns producing loud whip cracks, synchronized with brief, ethereal microtonal chords in the strings: both composed resonance and the profoundly muffled screams of some unfortunate victim.
Striking images are Streich’s stock of trade. Not “striking” as in aggressive or assertive – much of her work is quiet, timbrally fragile and temperamentally reticent – but as in singular, wonderfully imaginative, tightly bounded and strongly characterized, immediately compelling to the ear and more or less immediately graspable, with a musical significance that lies less in development or elaboration than in inherent properties and eventual juxtapositions. “For Swedish composer Lisa Streich’s Play Time (2012), members of Mantra Percussion sat at an inverted bicycle, one at each wheel and one between them at the frame. A set of crotales waited nearby. Making sounds on “found” objects is nothing new, and the bar for Streich was high. In Mantra’s nuanced performance, Play Time cleared every hurdle with room to spare. Mallet-on-frame tapping gave the work a rhythmic anchor that allowed Mantra to spin music out of sound. Delicate bowing set spokes humming, a tap on spokes became a quiet gong, spinning wheels fizzed and buzzed, pedals cranked a ratcheting chain, and here and there a fulsome, singing note emerged.”

“Ich könnte mich hier darin verlieren, für die Musik von Lisa Streich Worte zu finden. Reichhaltig sind die Zugänge, die sie ermöglicht, und das liegt nicht zuletzt an ihrer großen strukturellen Präzision und Differenzierung. Jedoch ist diese Präzision in keinem Moment einem leeren Spiel mit Virtuosität verpflichtet. Vielmehr scheint es immer um etwas Wesentliches zu gehen. Man könnte hierfür den Begriff des Ausdrucks wählen, denn die Musik lässt es zu, in ihr etwas zu erkennen, was sich vernetzt mit der Wahrnehmung im Allgemeinen. Sie kann taktil sein, schwebend, hart, melancholisch oder auch schmerzhaft, wenn sich z.B. alles zu einem scheinbaren Schrei verdichtet. Solche Begriffe oder Gefühle können sich beim Hören von Lisa Streichs Musik einstellen, doch sie stellt sie nicht aus. Vielmehr ermöglicht sie ledeglich ein solches Wahrnehmen, weil sie auch selbst der Wahrnehmung verpflichtet ist. Alles in ihrer Musik scheint aus ihr hervorzugehen, also ebenso ihre Tiefenschärfe, wie ihre große Weite.“

“I found Streich’s PIETÀ especially riveting. A Swede with a predilection for religious and philosophical subjectmatter, Streich here makes use of a cello outfitted with small motors on the outside of its body and microphones on the inside. One of the motors has strips of paper attached to it, which quietly strike the strings below the bridge as the wheel turns. The cello part — executed beautifully by Michael Bialobroda — leans on isolated phrases, sustained tones, and trills, rarely rising above a low dynamic and creating a mood of prayerful intensity. I was reminded of some of Sofia Gubaidulina’s more experimental work, but the vision seems thoroughly original.”
